Fun Monday #2 : How to Be a High-Functioning Hot Mess

Some people have their lives together. Others… have Google Calendar reminders that say “Buy more oat milk” and still forget. If you’re reading this, you might already suspect you’re a high-functioning hot mess: thriving in public, unraveling in private.

The good news? It’s not just chaos – it’s a skill. And apparently, there’s actual research that explains why you function like this without spontaneously combusting.

1. Keep Your Chaos Hidden in Plain Sight

Your desk looks fine because the mess is inside a “miscellaneous” drawer. Psychologists have found that messy environments can encourage unconventional thinking (Vohs et al., 2013). Not every study agrees – but if a little clutter keeps your brain moving, that’s not nothing.

2. Become a Deadline Acrobat

Motivation tends to spike as deadlines get closer (Temporal Motivation Theory; Steel & König, 2006). So that last-minute burst of focus isn’t you being reckless,  it’s just how some brains work. Of course, it’s not always comfortable. The stress is real.

3. Excel in Select Areas

You don’t have to have it all together. Maybe your budgeting is a mess, but your work output is solid. Or your fridge is empty, but your friendships are strong. Focusing on a few things you can rely on makes the rest of the chaos easier to carry.

4. Learn the Power of ‘Sorry, I Was in Meetings’

Even if you weren’t. It’s a safe way to explain slow replies. Just… use it wisely. Do this at your own risk,  lying is a sin, but so is sending “did you get my text?” when you clearly saw the read receipt.

5. Understand It’s Not Laziness

About 20–25% of adults are chronic procrastinators (Harriott & Ferrari, 1996). Often it’s linked to anxiety, ADHD, perfectionism, or how you process stress,  not lack of ambition. There’s nothing wrong with needing a different approach to get things done.

6. Cultivate Signature Chaos

Maybe it’s an overstuffed bag. Maybe it’s a habit of starting big projects at night. The details don’t matter. What matters is owning it. When you stop apologizing for the way you operate, it starts to feel less like a flaw and more like part of you.

Final Thought

Being a high-functioning hot mess means you’ve figured out something most people haven’t: life doesn’t need to be perfectly organized to work. Your chaos has structure, your mess has momentum, and somehow  you keep showing up. Which, if you think about it… is kind of impressive.
